Multi-media artist Maarten Perera is no stranger to the struggle for human dignity. Having worked with marginalized individuals for most of his adult life, Maarten aims to show, “marginalized voices that have taken a positive path,” in his work. His commitment to giving a voice to the underprivileged has earned him the recognition of Amnesty International, as he was selected as one of thirty Canadian artists to take part in the 60th anniversary celebration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. «more»

Poetry for Everyone

During the week leading up to the fifth annual Gabriola Poetry Festival, November 8 - 16, keep your eyes open for ‘Poetry Postings’ all over the island — they’ll be appearing in places as diverse as the library and the medical centre, the Gathering Place and the Rollo Centre, the ferry waiting room and the store at Silva Bay. These poetry boards invite you to share your love of words — to pin up your own poems, created on the spot or ones you’ve been hoarding in a bottom drawer, signed or anonymous, rhymed or free verse, hip hop or sonnet. Or you can post your all-time favourite poems – even if it’s just a few lines you remember from the days when ordinary folk memorized poems, recited them in public, sang them under balconies, chalked them on the sidewalk.
